October 2023

Our journey officially began with Bernadette Holmes at the NCLE Conference in Birmingham. This pivotal event provided an inspiring platform to discuss the future of language education, exchange ideas with leading experts, and lay the groundwork for the Solent Language Hub’s mission to promote linguistic excellence across the region.

 

November 2023

In November, we conducted interviews and carefully selected our partner schools, forming the foundation of a strong network committed to enhancing language learning opportunities and fostering collaboration across the region.

 

December 2023

December 2023 marked a significant milestone as the Solent Language Hub webpage went live. This platform became a hub for sharing resources, promoting collaboration, and offering access to  CPD opportunities, empowering educators to enhance language teaching across the region.

 

January 2024

January marked the official launch of the Solent Language Hub, celebrating our vision to transform language education. This event brought together educators, leaders, and partners to outline our mission, share goals, and kickstart a new era of collaboration and innovation in language learning.

 

February 2024

In February, we held our first Hub Working Group Meeting, uniting partner schools and key stakeholders to collaborate and discuss priorities. This pivotal session also laid the groundwork for our Portsmouth-wide Action Plan, outlining strategies to enhance language learning opportunities and celebrate linguistic diversity across the city.

 

March 2024

March was a month of connection and collaboration. We conducted familiarisation visits to all hub partner schools, strengthening relationships and gaining valuable insights into their needs and aspirations. Additionally, we held a productive collaboration meeting with the Adur Language Hub, fostering inter-hub partnerships to share best practices and drive innovation in language education.

 

April 2024

In April, we offered bespoke CPD sessions tailored to the evolving needs of language educators. Helen Myers led insightful training on the new GCSE specifications, while the Goethe-Institut introduced innovative approaches to incorporating AI in MFL lessons, equipping teachers with cutting-edge tools to inspire and engage their students.

 

June 2024

In June, we organized a student visit to Havant and South Downs College for A-Level taster sessions, giving learners a firsthand experience of advanced language studies. This initiative offered invaluable insight into the opportunities available for further education and inspired students to pursue languages at the next level.

 

July 2024

In July, we hosted a dynamic Teach Meet with Adur, featuring expert-led sessions from AQA and Pearson Edexcel on the new exam specification. This event brought together colleagues from Portsmouth and Brighton to explore best practices, share insights, and ensure a successful transition to the updated language exams.

 

July 2024

In July, we held a productive Working Group Meeting with our hub partners, including HSDC, Portsmouth College, and the University of Portsmouth. This collaborative session focused on aligning our goals, sharing progress, and further strengthening our partnerships. We also reviewed the ongoing Portsmouth-wide Action Plan, ensuring it continues to drive impactful language education initiatives and support the growth of language learning across the city.

 

July 2024

In July, we were thrilled to welcome Bernadette Holmes to the Solent Language Hub, showcasing the progress and accomplishments we’ve made over the year. This visit highlighted our collaborative efforts, the success of our initiatives, and our commitment to advancing language education across the region.

 

September to October 2024

During September and October, we successfully delivered Core Module 1 on Principled Practice, focusing on "Learning from What Works." Hub partners explored key concepts such as teacher knowledge, the Three Best Bets, and the Three Pillars of effective teaching. The sessions provided valuable insights that our partners are now implementing in their departments, strengthening teaching practices and enhancing language education across the region.

 

October 2024

The journey continued in October at the Oxford NCLE Conference, where we gathered with Bernadette Holmes and other language education leaders. The event featured an insightful session from the Goethe-Institut, highlighting the valuable support they offer to enhance German language learning in our schools. This collaboration further strengthened our commitment to advancing language education across the region.

 

November 2024

In November, we completed our first familiarisation visits to all our partner schools for this academic year. We were delighted to witness the positive impact that our CPD sessions have had on individual hub partner schools. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and commitment from the leaders of each hub school, as they shared how they have been implementing the strategies and insights gained to enhance language education.

In November, we hosted our third Working Group meeting, bringing together educators from across the Primary, Secondary, Further, and Higher Education sectors. This diverse representation fostered meaningful dialogue about the future of language education, allowing for the exchange of ideas, challenges, and strategies to strengthen language learning at every stage of education.

 

December 2024

In December, we delivered Core Module 2, focusing on key strategies for improving language education. We were also honoured to welcome professor Suzanne Graham as a guest speaker. Her insightful talk on "Motivation through Foundational Knowledge" provided valuable perspectives on how to inspire students in language learning. To build on this session, we introduced micro-projects for each of our Hub partner schools, designed to implement Suzanne's strategies and measure the impact on student motivation and engagement in their language learning environments.
